We would like to thank everyone who supported our efforts and assisted in the defeat of C&B's proposal for the Centre at Garden Hills. We couldn't have done this without each and every one of you and the reason that the residents of Cranston were so successful in protecting our community was that we came together from neighborhoods all over the city.
This is one step in an ongoing process. As you've most likely read in the Providence Journal, the owner of Mulligan's Island is still interested in selling the golf course to a developer. Fortunately, any proposal that is put forth in the future will need to face the same hurdles including the fact that the land is not designated for commercial use in the Comprehensive Plan and the zoning would need to be changed. The owner was allowed to open Mulligan's only because it was to create a balance of open, recreational space while acting as a buffer to the prison. It was approved by the City as a golf course and that is the only usage that land is zoned for.
SCOS has incorporated as a nonprofit and we will be continuing our efforts, now focusing on finding ways to protect that land from the threat of development and remaining prepared for another attempt at developing Mulligan's Island. Although the group was born out of the Mulligan's proposal, we intend to remain an active part of Cranston's community and will not only focus on that parcel as there may be other pieces of land (currently zoned Open Space) in the City that face a similar threat in the future.
Thank you again for your assistance and we're grateful to have wonderful neighbors in Cranston!
